from A Compendium Of Demonology and Magic (c. 1775)

A selection of pages from an eighteenth-century demonology book, the full Latin title of which, Compendium rarissimum totius Artis Magicae sistematisatae per celeberrimos Artis hujus Magistros, roughly translates to “A rare summary of the entire Magical Art by the most famous Masters of this Art.“ Written in German and Latin the book has been dated to around 1775, although it seems the unknown author tried to pass it off as an older relic, mentioning the year 1057 on the title page.

Let’s talk Spirits: Hellhounds

traveler-by-moonlight:

Seemingly common in the astral plane, they are owned by various demons. While legend has it that they are said to “guard” entrances to hell or treasure..they more commonly do bidding for demons. Think of them as literally “hounds” on the hunt for wild game. They are sent to round of the dead who or those demons deem troublesome.

Encountering them in our world is said to be an ill omen. A harbinger of death and it is believed if you look into their eyes 3 times or more it will end your life.

Teas for Witches: the Basics

death-witch-envy:

I can talk about tea literally all day (and I have because I’ve worked in a spice and tea shop for years), and there is SO much to talk about with both health and magical benefits. Teas are made from tea leaves called camellia sinensis, with the exception of herbal teas/infusions. For this, I’m going to list magical and health benefits by type of tea.

Black Tea

Feminine * Earth * Winter * Strength * Stability * Death * Expelling Negativity * Alertness * Energy

Black tea is the most fermented and oxidized of all teas. Its tea leaves look shriveled and black. It combats heart ailments, digestive problems, high cholesterol, asthma, and breast/menstrual problems. Black tea also has a lot of caffeine (47 mg, still less than coffee) and too much of it can cause acidity issues in the stomach.

Examples: English/Irish Breakfast Tea, Assam, Darjeeling, Lapsung Souchang, Ceylon, Earl Grey

**There is a subset of black tea called Pu-erh, a post-fermented black tea. Some consider this to be the “purest” of all teas and connect it to the aether, as it is rare and valuable.

Green Tea

Masculine * Fire * Summer * Passion * Healing * Conscious Mind * Sexual Health * Love * Energy * Progress * Magic

Green tea is slightly steamed but not fermented, which maintains its green color. It has many health benefits, such as detoxifying, reducing cholesterol and weight, boosting immunity and stamina, and reducing blood glucose. It has less caffeine than black, but still some.

Examples: Jasmine, Sencha, Matcha, Gyokurocha, Genmaicha, Hojicha, Gunpowder, Dragonwell

Oolong Tea

Feminine * Water * Autumn * Reflection * Meditation * Wisdom * Serenity * Concentration * Romance * Friendship

I always describe Oolong as being between Green and Blacks, since it is half fermented. It can help manage weight and stress, balance blog sugar levels, remove free radicals, and promote healthy skin and bones. HOWEVER, too much can actually speed up bone degradation because it sweeps away excess calcium. And beware of its high caffeine content (I used to drink Raspberry Wulong to pull all-nighters).

Examples: Milk Oolong, Formosa, Wulongs

White Tea

Masculine * Air * Spring * Happiness * Wisdom * Moon * Purification * Protection * Clarity * Cleansing * Beginnings

White tea is a little harder to find. Either the tea leaves are plucked as immature leaves and steamed, or the leaves have not been processed (there seems to be little consensus across cultures). Some have a small amount of caffeine. It’s a great antibacterial and antioxidant, and it improves the heart, oral health, and skin. Drinking a couple cups works better than one, and you can reuse the tea leaves, granted that the second cup will brew longer.

Examples: White teas come in many flavors and are usually labeled as white tea. You may need to seek out a tea shop to find some.

Herbal Tea

Magical properties depend on which herbs are used

This tea seems to be the most popular for witches on tumblr, because it is composed of dry, unprocessed herbs, seeds, fruits, or roots, and has no caffeine (as long as the herb doesn’t!). There are many recipes online as herbals are easy to make. In general, herbal tea promotes calm, reduces cholesterol and risk of heart conditions, cancers, and diabetes. Due to its lack of actual tea leaves it has less antioxidants than other teas. Some don’t even call it a tea, but dub it Herbal Infusion.

Examples: Rooibos, most Chais, Ginseng, Chamomile, Peppermint, Spearmint, Hibiscus

**Yerba Mate is an herbal tea that is notorious for its high caffeine levels (you’ve probably seen the energy drink). It also zaps one’s appetite and can become addictive, so be careful around this tea!

As always, feel free to add/message me of any corrections, and I hope you find your cup of tea!

Coffee Spell To Facilitate A Good Day

revivalish:

This is just a small thing I came up with on the fly, b/c I drink a lot of coffee and I have to find lowkey, under-the-radar ways to incorporate magic into my everyday life. Please note that you can (and, as we’re different people with different lives, probably should) alter these ingredients some to fit your own needs, as I’ve chosen them specifically based on the challenges that usually present themselves to me on an average day.

Gather:

☕️ Coffee

☕️ Your favorite mug, or one you consider “lucky”

☕️ Allspice (as a closeted trans man, I use this to promote feeling masculine and secure in my identity)*

☕️ Sugar (it tastes good, also to promote sweetness and kindness in yourself)

☕️ Cinnamon (to promote warmth, a happy domestic environment, and protection)

☕️ Half-and-half creamer (optional, I just don’t like using sugar without creamer)

☕️ Coffee syrup (also optional, but I use caramel to promote happiness and warmth)

Stir everything together clockwise. You can use a correspondingly colored plastic straw or spoon to stir it if you want - yellow for happiness, green for luck and prosperity, etc.

*I always try to remind people that gendered herb/spice associations don’t have to be there if you don’t want them to be.

Good luck and happy coffee drinking! xoxo, Finley ✨

For those who need a little nudge:

This is your weekly reminder to do something for your practice! Add something to your BOS, spend a few minutes reflecting on your path, light a candle, write down an experience - anything!

citrus-witch:
“CITRUS-WITCH’S FORTUNE COOKIE SPELL!
As you can see, I’ve been collecting fortune slips from dozens of fortune cookies over the years. (I keep my family’s too- I didn’t eat all those myself!) I use them for art projects occasionally...

Losing your Witchy Spark - and getting it back.

image

Warning - This is a long post.

For days, weeks, even months you might feel unmotivated to practice. Thats okay.

My witchcraft can feel off and on, and there are times where I haven’t casted a spell or read a witchy book in a week. I lose my witchy touch, my spark. The passion I have for witchcraft. Despite all of this, I am still a witch.

What is a witchy spark?

The fuel to practice, motivation, desire. Involving yourself into your practice consistently and whole heartedly. Feeling the magic run through you, but sometimes this motivation is lost.

How do we lose our spark?

Our ability to practice is affected by everything around us. Closeted witches, low spoon witches, witches with mental illness and witches going through life issues. All of these affect our craft.

We feel overwhelmed, lost, tired, and exhausted. We no longer feel our magic, or the desire to cast. This doesnt mean we do not want to be a witch, but that at the time we simply feel like we lost our touch.

Sometimes we get so caught up in life that we even forget about witchcraft.

We are still witches.

Beginners, don’t be afraid to put life first. Things can get hectic, and at times you might have to put aside your craft to take care of yourself and others. You are still a witch.

Pictured above is part of my altar that I just set up yesterday after having been moved in for months. I have been feeling overwhelmed by school, my mental illness, and my family to a degree that made practicing witchcraft difficult. I lost my spark and did not practice for months. Slowly, im gaining my motivation to practice again.

Here are some things that can help.

image

Looking at tumblr - this might sound basic, but it can really help. Looking at low spoon spells and other witches doing their thing can really help

Downloading other witchy apps - Amino offers many witchcraft groups such as “Pagans and Witches”, that feature lots of spells, chatrooms, and a good community. You can find other apps like tarot decks and runes to help spark some simple practice.

Picking up an easy book - Skimming through easy to read books can help motivate one to slowly easing themselves back into their witchcraft. Pictured above are some books with spells in an easy bullet point format as well as information that’s easy to read. Supermaket Sabbats really helped me feel motivated to begin reading more witchy books again. (The other book is The Good Witch’s Guide).

Doing a daily card pull - Or even just being near your deck. Sleeping with it, shuffling it and doing one card pulls help build confidence and desire to beginning spreads. (Deck pictured above is the Linestrider’s Tarot).

Sit at your altar - Or somewhere you feel at peace and connected to with your magic. This is calming and can help you when you feel overwhelmed. Just taking a break and meditating at your altar is magic.

Take a bath - Something simple, even if its just lighting a candle, using a bathbomb, or listening to music. Use it as a time to cleanse yourself, and wash the negativity off. Making a clean slate.

Always take care of yourself - Even if its hard, even if you want to devote yourself entirely to magic or anything else, take care of yourself. Put your life first. You will still be a witch.

Whether you’re a baby witch, an old witch, a closeted witch, or an open witch, we all lose motivation at some point. We also always get it back. We are always witches.

I hope this post helps you into transitioning back into practice if you ever lose your spark.

Bed magic (for my spoonie witches):

heatherwitch:

The setup:
🌟-Sigils placed under your mattress for pain-free rest and anything else you need!
🌟-Place crystals under your pillow (or in the case) for restful sleep or a specific use. I often place amethyst and Quartz under my pillow for headaches!
🌟-Hang herb sachets above your bed.
🌟-Keep any supplies you want nearby in case you become bedridden.

Bedridden witchy things:
🌸-Play with spare bits of energy in the room.
🌸-Listen to music that makes you feel witchy/powerful.
🌸-Wash your face with a pre-prepared cleansing spray (add herbs and such).
🌸-If possible, open a window for at least five minutes and soak in the sensations of the outside world.
🌸-Read a witchy book/write in your grimoire.
🌸-Hold your crystals or keep them near you.
🌸-Washing your sheets/blankets/pillow case = the ultimate cleanse.
🌸-Meditate and work on breathing.
🌸-Spend some time with your tarot cards or pendulum (you don’t have to use them though!).
🌸-Do some dream magick.
🌸-Drink some herbal tea.

Remember, your witchiness isn’t based on your ability to practice all the time. It’s perfectly acceptable to take as long as you need when you aren’t feeling great.

(This is okay for everyone to reblog and use btw.)
Spoonie Acts of Witchery

softbutchmonet:

AKA low-spoon-friendly witchy things dedicated to @falloutfae

• Lighting a candle (especially a battery/flame less one; don’t need to worry about being vigilant like a normal candle)

• Opening a window (even slightly) to bring fresh air/energy and whisk away stale energy

• Keeping an “e-Shrine”, such as a Tumblr sideblog. Reblogs can be a cast spell or a techno witch offering for a deity

• Unable to do kitchen witchery? Nope! Even something like blessing your food/drink with intent, or putting a pinch of salt on your plate to cleanse before you eat, counts.

• Putting your phone on speaker to play a song to use as a spell. Sing, hum, read, or focus along to the lyrics.

• Placing a crystal next to a glass of water to charge the drink with your intent, sip it when you feel it’s ready

• Placing an item to charge on top/below/against your plugged in phone/other device. As the device is charged, as is your magical item

Feel free to add on if you’re a spoonie/chronically ill/disabled witch!
